RIVER INFORMATION

Keep the Water Clean

Our bodies are made up of about 70 percent water. From this one fact we can safely say that our water supplies need to be extremely clean. But not only is the clean water necessary for our survival, it is also a key component to the survival of many species of animals.

As stated on the previous page, the nature conservancy protects over 5,000 miles of river systems. Along with this they also operate over 100 marine conservation projects. The nature conservancy is very dedicated to helping keep nature beautiful and protect it from every form of pollution.

Our rivers and water systems are subject to many types of pollution. There is pollution from industries that are pumping harmful chemicals into the water, there are people who throw things into the water not thinking about the harm that it can do, and major pollution from numerous boats and boating spills; all of these occurences need to be checked and taken care of to keep from having more advers effects on our environment.

The Animals Suffer

When the waters are polluted it is not humans that are going to suffer. We are not able to drink the water directly out of streams anyway because it has impurities in it. Therefor, we have purification techniques that will ensure that the water we drink is okay for us to consume. The animals that live in these habitats, however, have no such way to purify the water. They are left to fend for themselves, and this is never a good thing. Large numbers of animals are dying each year from the water pollution; a large percentage of our coral reefs are suffering because of the contamination in the environment in which they live.

Animals caught in nets trying to get out to survive, covered in oil and just trying to breath, swimming in water that is impossible to see in, the list goes on. Words cannot describe the terrible condition that numbers of animals are having to live in each day, and the worst part is that they have done nothing to destroy their homes. It has been humans that have caused all of these problems, and it is only right that we should do everything in our power to correct what we have done.

How Long will this Go on?

There have been organizations centered around the curtailing of pollution for over 100 years. It has not stopped much at all though. It is going to take the action of numerous individuals who care and are dedicated to the cause for any progress to be seen in the future. This is where the Nature Conservancy comes in, because they are dedicated and have been doing this for many years. But the Nature Conservancy can only do so much on its own, but if we help then there is no limit to the amount that we can accomplish.
