- Erect-crested Penguins currently breed only on the Bounty and Antipodes Islands, New Zealand.
- Nesting takes place colonially at high densities, with some rookeries containing thousands of pairs, and in association with colonies of albatross, Rockhopper Penguins and fur seals.
- Krill and squid are the principal prey species, with some small fish included in the diet.
- The Erect-crested Penguin is listed as “Endangered” by IUCN based on rapid past and current decline.
- Global warming is the only major known threat to this species. The significant declines are all attributed to major changes in the marine environment that have reduced overall productivity and penguin prey.
