Fiordland Penguins

Fiordland Penguins

  • The Fiordland Crested Penguin nests on the west and south coasts of New Zealand’s South Island, Solander Island and on Stewart Island and several adjacent offshore islands.
  • The Fiordland Crested Penguin feeds on fish, squid, octopus and krill.
  • They breed in colonies situated in dense, temperate rainforest along shores and rocky coastlines, and sometimes in sandy bays. Nests are shallow scrapes which can be located in caves, under logs, at the base of trees or boulders, or under dense bushes.
  • Leading threats to the Fiordland Crested Penguin include industrial fisheries that degrade marine prey abundance and cause direct mortality through bycatch, invasive alien predator species, and global warming.
