When friends and family came together in 1980, they wanted to find a way to honor the spirit of a man who strongly believed in his country and the value of its youth. With that spirit in mind, The Jesse Owens Foundation was created. The Purpose
The integration and stardom of blacks in sports were major turning points in history. Not only did these events revolutionize those sports but people's minds as well. The struggle of these athletes helped people to realize the truth in the notion that all men are created equal. Athletes who by their actions acknowledged and accepted their role as groundbreakers for African-Americans not only on the playing field but in life .Jackie Robinson integrated baseball. Althea Gibson showed courage when she became the first African-American (man or woman) to play professional tennis. Arthur Ashe represented dignity when he became the first black man to be the #1 tennis player in the world. Bill Russell embodied leadership when he became the first black star in Boston and the first black coach in the NBA. Jesse Owens inspired the notion of equality after he won four gold medals in the 1936 olympics, breaking three records and tying one. Joe Louis inspired hope. He was a great boxer who represented the struggle of the African-American both inside and outside the ring. All of these athletes made sacrifices for the greater good of mankind.
